Os Hillman was born in 1912 in the small town of Kingsport, Tennessee. He received his B.S. from Vanderbilt University in 1936 and his M.D. from the University of Tennessee, Medical School in 1940
Dr. Hillman served as assistant professor at both Vanderbilt and UT and became a full professor at UT in 1948. He was head of the Department of Psychiatry at UT for over thirty years and served as president of the American Psychiatric Association and also held positions with the American College of Psychiatrists and the Western Psychiatric Association.
